ASF cases in Nueva Viscaya ‘under control’–BAI

Jordeene B. Lagare

African swine fever (ASF) cases in Nueva Vizcaya are “under control” despite reports of an ongoing outbreak in the province, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) said.

In a statement on Thursday, BAI clarified that ASF cases in the province “are not indicative of an ongoing widespread outbreak.”

“The reports were isolated cases that have been promptly addressed and remain under control, with no evidence of transmission or spread in the province,” it added.

BAI added that the recorded ASF case in Kasibu town had already been contained, involving a single farmer. The case is no longer active, based on BAI monitoring and surveillance results.

Furthermore, BAI said the Provincial Veterinary Services Office had recorded the 23 ASF cases in the towns of Kasibu, Bayombong and Villaverde.

Based on BAI’s June 5 tally, there are active ASF cases in seven provinces, namely Pangasinan, Romblon, Albay, Northern Samar, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur.

In an advisory earlier, BAI’s National African Swine Fever Prevention and Control Program said local hog raisers should check their animals, noting that ASF spreads rapidly during the rainfall season.

“Prolonged exposure to damp and cold conditions can increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, skin infections and even ASF,” BAI said earlier.

It also advised hog raisers to inspect the roofing and walls for leaks as well as apply proper biosecurity measures, including effective waste disposal and drainage.

They are likewise told to report to local authorities or veterinarians any unusual clinical signs observed in their pigs.
