BIZ BUZZ: All out support for Veloso
Three major organizations representing government workers and retirees have thrown their full support behind the leadership of Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) President and General Manager Wick Veloso, praising his team’s transparency, sound financial management, and openness to member concerns.
The Philippine Government Employees Association (PGEA), which counts more than 600,000 members, the 280,000-strong Philippine Alliance of Retired Educators (Pare), and the GSIS Retirees Association, Inc. each declared confidence in the pension fund’s current direction amid renewed controversy over its investments and governance.
In statements and recent meetings with Veloso, the groups said they had seen firsthand the agency’s responsiveness to issues raised by members and pensioners.
“We see his careful management and service to government workers,” PGEA President Esperanza Ocampo said of Veloso.
The PARE, led by former Education Undersecretary Jesus Mateo and founder Abigael Ignacio, also met with Veloso and other GSIS officials to discuss retirees’ long-standing concerns such as dividends, pension hikes, and Christmas cash gifts.
“We want to be your mouthpiece to tell everyone that GSIS is strong and stable,” Mateo said, adding that PARE will help spread accurate information on GSIS programs and financial standing.
With support from big government employee and retiree groups, Veloso appears to have shored up his base—an important vote of confidence as GSIS continues to navigate market headwinds and public scrutiny.
