BIZ BUZZ: Don’t mess with Philippine coins

Ian Nicolas P. Cigaral

Got spare coins lying around? Better keep them in good shape—or else.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has reminded the public that melting or damaging Philippine coins is a big no-no under the law, even if they’re commemorative keepsakes.

Presidential Decree No. 247 makes it illegal to willfully deface, mutilate, tear, burn or destroy any Philippine currency issued by the BSP. Those caught in the act could face up to five years in jail and fines of as much as P20,000.

The central bank stressed that regular coins are meant to keep everyday transactions rolling, while commemorative coins are minted to honor key moments in Philippine history, iconic landmarks and the legacies of notable Filipinos.

Bottom line from the BSP: spend them, save them, admire them—just don’t damage them.
