BIZ BUZZ: Fury over coffee
This Makati Regional Trial Court judge simply had enough of litterbugs.
In an order that had nothing to do with the high-powered lawyers’ civil case but everything to do with their conduct, this furious judge barred them, their companions and other involved parties from bringing any beverages in disposable cups, bottles or other containers to the courtroom.
Any littering would be dealt with “heavily,” including contempt of court, criminal prosecution and referral of disciplinary action against the lawyers to the Supreme Court, said the judge whose blood boiled over at the sight of empty Starbucks coffee cups left behind by the parties after hearings in his courtroom.
The judge pointed out that the court had been lenient and allowed the lawyers and the other parties to bring their beverages inside the courtroom, “considering that coffee is life.”
But those days are gone as the parties left behind empty Starbucks coffee cups not just once but twice, causing steam to come out of the judge’s ears.
Biz Buzz sources said that the chastened lawyers from some of the country’s leading corporate law offices are religiously following the judge’s orders and have not brought in any coffee—Starbucks or otherwise—during subsequent hearings.
Because they failed to do the decent thing and dispose of their trash properly, they would just have to get their coffee fix before or after the hearing or risk getting another unfavorable decision from the judge.
