BIZ BUZZ: Garin seeks closer PH-Asean ties

Top energy officials flew to Malaysia to supercharge the Philippines’ power alliance with Asean counterparts.
The Department of Energy (DOE), led by its chief Sharon Garin, targets to highlight the country’s goals at the Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting in Kuala Lumpur from October 14 to 17.
Garin said the agency will spotlight the sector’s progress in the renewable energy push and the expansion of electrification to more Filipinos, hoping to lead regional efforts.
In addition to sharing industry best practices, it seeks to explore joint projects on smart grids, cross-border power sharing, and modern infrastructure.
“We’re fully committed to working closely with our Asean neighbors to tackle energy challenges and unlock new opportunities,” Garin said.
The government will likewise have “senior-level” discussions to finalize key regional agreements, covering a new Asean power grid, petroleum security deal, and long-term renewable energy plan.
The Philippines’ goal of including nuclear power in its electricity generation mix may also get backing from Asean countries with talks on nuclear energy cooperation.
