BIZ BUZZ: Hann goes for golf

Golf tourism is all the rage recently, with more developers integrating this niche sport into their pipeline projects.

But Hann Holdings Inc. seems unfazed. It plans to establish three golf courses at its sprawling 455-hectare property in Clark.

The secret? Grass that’s 20 times more expensive than the usual Bermuda we see on golf courses.

“My investment in the golf course is much more expensive than other developments,” Hann chair and CEO Han Dae-sik told reporters.

The trick of luxury golf grass is its ability to consume only 40 to 50 percent of water because of an equally expensive drainage and irrigation system.

According to Han, you won’t have to wait for the grass to dry—like during the stormy season—just to play. It’s just one of the unique offerings that he hopes will entice investors in time for Hann’s P13-billion IPO in September.

“Our drainage system is designed in a way that even though there’s heavy rain now, and then one hour later you walk and you can play,” Han said.

We may not have to wait long for this magic grass. The first of three golf courses is all set for a soft launch later this year before a grand opening in 2026.
