BIZ BUZZ: Jollibee brewing another coffee play

Emmanuel John Abris

It looks like Jollibee Foods Corp. isn’t done pouring into the coffee boom.

The homegrown fast-food giant is bringing South Korea’s Compose Coffee to the Philippines after signing a master franchise agreement through its unit Fresh N’ Famous Foods Inc.—the latest move to bulk up its beverage arsenal and tap Filipinos’ growing appetite for specialty drinks.

Compose Coffee isn’t exactly a small catch.

Founded in 2014, the Korean chain has expanded to over 3,000 stores, built on a scalable model and a menu heavy on crowd favorites like Americanos and flavored lattes.

Its brand has also gained global buzz thanks in part to partnerships with big names such as BTS member V.

Jollibee Group Philippines CEO Joseph Tanbuntiong said the planned launch this year supports one of the company’s key growth pillars—coffee and tea—while finance chief Richard Shin noted the group’s focus on scaling brands with strong global potential.

The addition will further deepen Jollibee’s presence in the beverage space, where it already has exposure through brands like Highlands Coffee and The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.
