BIZ BUZZ: McDonald’s PH goes green

Lisbet K. Esmael

We all know not everything on McDonald’s Philippines’ menu is green, but the electricity is—well, at least for some select stores in Luzon.

Fast-food operator Golden Arches Development Corp. has tapped Shell Energy Philippines (SEPH) as it gradually shifts to renewable energy to power its stores.

It would initially cover six McDonald’s stores within the franchise area of Manila Electric Co.

SEPH, the retail electricity arm of oil giant Shell, sells electricity to more than 100 commercial and industrial customers.

The deal was made possible through the government’s green energy option program, allowing customers consuming an average peak demand of 50 kilowatts to source their power from clean power assets.

“This commitment is brought to life through our Green & Good initiative, which guides how we reduce our environmental impact while continuing to serve millions of customers every day,” said Andre Villareal, vice president for Supply Chain Management at McDonald’s Philippines.
