BIZ BUZZ: MGEN unit bags global awards
MGEN Renewable Energy Inc., the clean energy arm of Meralco PowerGen Corp., has garnered international recognition for several of its flagship projects, securing a total of six awards from major industry bodies across the region.
The company earned distinctions from the Asian Power Awards, IJGlobal ESG Awards and Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards 2025, reflecting its growing presence in utility-scale renewables and its push to accelerate the Philippines’ energy transition.
“This recognition affirms MGEN’s leadership in responsible project development and its commitment to integrating sustainability and social impact into its renewable energy projects,” the company said.
At the 2025 Asian Power Awards, MGEN Renewables received the “Power Plant Upgrade of the Year—Philippines” citation for its expanded Baras Solar facility in Rizal.
Now operating at 80.1 megawatts (MW) alternating current of net sellable capacity, the project stands as the first and only solar farm in the province.
MGEN also gained international attention at the IJGlobal ESG Awards, where its flagship MTerra Solar project spanning Bulacan and Nueva Ecija was named “ESG Developer of the Year—Asia Pacific”.
MTerra Solar further swept multiple citations at the Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, earning two Gold Stevies—Innovation in Energy & Sustainability and Sustainability & Climate Protection Services—and a Bronze Stevie for Sustainable Business Models.
The massive development is poised to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage complex, expected to supply clean power to 2.4 million households annually and avoid 4.3 million tons of carbon emissions per year.
Meanwhile, BulacanSol, MGEN’s 55-MW solar facility in San Miguel, Bulacan, received a Bronze Stevie for its role in “Meralco’s Road to a Coal-Free Future by 2050,” underscoring its contribution to the company’s long-term sustainability pathway.
The latest accolades strengthen MGEN’s progress toward its target of developing 1,500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This target is aligned with the national goal of achieving a 35 percent renewable energy share by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
