BIZ BUZZ: PSA’s ‘PSA’ on smart shopping
With more people clicking “checkout” than ever, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has issued a “public service announcement” (PSA), urging shoppers to pause and think before sharing personal information.
Behind every flashy discount or “limited-time offer” lurks the risk of oversharing—and a few careless clicks could turn a shopping spree into a privacy headache.
Not all personal information belongs in a checkout form, the PSA says. Full names, addresses, phone numbers and payment details should only be shared when absolutely necessary.
The rule is simple: the less personal information you give out, the lower your chances of identity theft or online fraud.
Buying from trusted sellers is another key step toward safe shopping. Checking ratings, reading customer reviews and verifying a seller’s authenticity can save buyers from scams and unpleasant surprises.
Privacy rights are just as important.
The PSA reminds consumers that couriers cannot require buyers to be photographed during delivery. A simple rule of thumb: show the parcel, not your face.
Finally, proper disposal of personal information is crucial. Waybills, packaging and any documents containing sensitive details should be shredded or blacked out before tossing them.
The PSA’s PSA is simple: shop smart, share less. A little caution goes a long way.
