BIZ BUZZ: Tanduay proves it’s not your average drink

If you know Tanduay only as a cheap, accessible drink that gets the job done, think again.

Globally, liquors under Lucio Tan-led Tanduay Distillers, Inc. are consistently hoisting the Philippine flag by racking up awards, with five of its premium rums bagging top honors at the latest International Spirits Competition organized by Enthusiast Report Magazine.

Leading the pack was Tanduay Double Rum, which secured a Double Gold medal, while Gold awards went to Reserve Rum 10 Years, Asian Rum Gold, and Reserve Rum Overproof. Asian Rum Silver, meanwhile, took home a Silver medal.

It was not just an overwhelming win, but a diverse one for Tanduay’s portfolio, too.

For instance, its Double Gold-winning Tanduay Double Rum was recognized for its blending and aging process, combining rums aged 16 and five years before undergoing additional aging in ex-bourbon barrels.

Other awardees, such as the 10-year reserve and overproof variants, were recognized for their focus on aging and profile differentiation across both sipping and mixing categories.

And no, the judges were not just casual drinkers. The panel was composed of seasoned spirits evaluators with a combined 100 years of tasting experience.

“These awards demonstrate that Tanduay’s production standards are consistent across our different rum profiles,” said Roy Kristoffer Sumang, international business development manager at Tanduay.

So, while Tanduay may still be known locally as an affordable go-to, it boasts of an entirely different identity on the global stage. Because there, the age-old Philippine liquor brand is increasingly being judged and recognized on a different standard altogether.
