BIZ BUZZ: Women’s Day Treasury prank
At close to 9 p.m. on Saturday, people reviewing government securities auction data on the official Facebook page of the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) got an eye-popping surprise: a reel showing a scantily clad Asian woman posing by the pool.
Did somebody play a trick on the BTr?
Whoever seized the FB page got a naughty idea on how to pay homage to “International Women’s Day.”
But there’s no way, of course, that the BTr will commercialize women to attract investors.
Prior to the posting of the reel—which had run for about an hour before it was finally deleted—the last post on the BTr page was all too serious: an advancer for Women’s Day during the last Treasury bond auction on March 4.
“Women Power at the Treasury,” it captioned, noting that the auction was led by an all-woman committee.
“This highlights the strength and capability of women in leadership roles, particularly in public financial management. The Treasury is committed to redefining leadership and advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, with female employees constituting a majority across both the Central and Regional Offices of the Bureau,” the post said.
After taking the post down, the BTr admitted that the FB page had indeed been “compromised”.
“While BTr has already regained access, we have yet to fully assess the extent of the security breach. We strongly advise the public to disregard any malicious posts, messages, or announcements from the compromised page until further notice,” the BTr said in its latest update.
The government agency advised the public to instead use its official website www.treasury.gov.ph and other verified communication channels.
Why was the BTr, which has been led by women for two consecutive terms now, targeted on the day meant to honor womanhood?
