BIZ BUZZ: All systems go for SM Prime’s Cebu arena

Emmanuel John Abris

After years in development, SM Prime Holdings Inc. said its much-awaited Cebu arena remains on track for a June opening this year, signaling that the property giant is finally nearing its biggest push yet into the regional live entertainment scene.

The upcoming SM Seaside Cebu Arena is poised to become one of the country’s largest indoor venues, with seven storys and a capacity for up to 25,000 spectators.

The facility marks the Sy family-led SM Prime’s second large-scale arena after the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The company is clearly betting that Cebu can evolve into a viable alternative stop for major concerts and international productions, especially as demand for large entertainment venues grows outside Metro Manila.

Even before opening, the arena has reportedly secured bookings from acts such as Bini, IV of Spades, TJ Monterde, KZ Tandingan and American pop-rock band Lany.

SM Prime is likewise emphasizing the venue’s global-standard ambitions, highlighting its center-hung displays, immersive LED boards and 5G-ready infrastructure as it seeks to replicate the success of its Manila arena business in Cebu.
