BIZ BUZZ: Meralco wages war vs plastic

For power utility giant Manila Electric Co., sustainability isn’t just about clean energy—it’s also about cleaning up waste.

This, as the Pangilinan-led group seeks to insert sustainability goals “into every facet of its operations,” including turning its plastic waste into eco-friendly building materials.

For this, Meralco has teamed up with Plastic Flamingo Philippines, Inc. (PLAF), a French group focused on recycling plastic products.

“With PLAF’s help, we are turning our plastic waste into useful materials—diverting them away from landfills and oceans, and contributing to a circular economy,” Meralco executive vice president and chief operating officer Ronnie Aperocho said.

This partnership is also part of Meralco’s Race to Zero Waste program, meant to cut its waste footprint.

“A key driver of its wide success was our groundbreaking ban on single-use plastics, which was put in place in 2019. This boosted our waste diversion rate more than fivefold—from a baseline of 17 percent to 95 percent today. This partnership with PLAF builds on that achievement…,” Meralco first vice president and chief sustainability officer Raymond Ravelo said.
