BIZ BUZZ: Not keen on ERC post

Department of Energy (DOE) officer-in-charge Secretary Sharon Garin remains plugged into the agency as she rejected the idea of a new power move—this time, a seat at the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

“You asked me if I’m interested? No, I’m not,” Garin recently told reporters.

Two commissioners are retiring within the month, leaving vacant posts at the ERC. Its chair and CEO Monalisa Dimalanta, however, said that it would be business as usual while they wait for replacements.

Garin said that although the position is “one of the most distinguished positions in the energy sector,” she believes there are individuals who are “more qualified,” given the technical nature of leading the commission.

“You have to understand the industry very well, the technicality of it, the engineering side, the economic side…I am a CPA-lawyer; I think economists and engineers are more suitable for that position,” she said.

The official temporarily leads the DOE after President Marcos Jr. has moved to “recalibrate” his administration following the midterm polls.
