BIZ BUZZ: Scammers, BPI is calling

Emmanuel John Abris

Scammers may soon have a tougher time getting BPI clients to pick up the phone.

BPI has teamed up with anti-scam technology company Gogolook to help customers identify fraudulent calls and messages—and tell the real bank from someone merely pretending to be it.

Under the partnership, qualified BPI clients will get complimentary access to Whoscall Premium Basic for 12 months upon activation.

The app can identify unknown callers, block spam and scam calls, as well as filter suspicious messages.

The tie-up will also help verify BPI’s official outbound calls, addressing that familiar dilemma whenever an unknown number rings: bank or scammer?

Still, BPI isn’t promising an impenetrable digital shield.

Alma Aldip, BPI’s head of unsecured lending and cards-product and sales, said customers should remain vigilant even with the added protection.

The bank also stressed that Whoscall is a third-party application whose features and performance are handled by Gogolook.
