Construction of P1.5-B Batangas solar project begins

Wyn Power Corp. has started constructing a P1.5-billion Batangas solar farm, a project awarded under a government program to increase renewables’ share in the power mix.
In a statement on Wednesday, the company said the 50-megawatt (MW) ground-mounted solar project can generate up to 74 million kilowatt hours of clean energy every year.
It is also considered the first utility-scale solar project in the fourth district of Batangas.
“This 50-MW addition to the Luzon grid will significantly benefit industries and consumers served by Batelec II (Batangas II Electric Cooperative, Inc.) and nearby electric cooperatives,” its president and chief executive Rodel Arada said.
“We stand tall that this project will be able to help the country’s renewable energy aspiration while providing much-needed employment in the countryside,” Arada added.
The plant, which would be constructed on a 48-hectare site, will utilize more than 77,000 solar panels, according to the company.
For a seamless connection to the power grid, the facility would be linked to Batelec II and the 69-kilovolt transmission line of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines.
The company’s portfolio also includes rooftop solar and minihydro plants. Wyn Power has also sealed partnerships with some of the big names in the market wanting to shift to clean energy, including Aboitiz Land, Rockwell Land, SM Development Corp., Nestle, LandCo Pacific, Global-Estate Resorts Inc., EEI Corp., Absolut Distillers Inc. and Steel Asia.
Wyn Power was one of the winning bidders in the Department of Energy’s green energy auction program (GEAP) last December 2023.
GEAP seeks to accelerate a plan to expand renewables’ share in the power generation mix to 35 percent by 2030 from the current 22 percent. The ambition, however, is to increase the share further to 50 percent by 2040.
