Preparing students for the demands of an increasingly digital economy is a responsibility shared across sectors. Through the Academic Innovation Challenge (AIC), R.G. Manabat & Co. (KPMG in the Philippines) aims to contribute to this effort by encouraging students to apply emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and low-code platforms, to real-world problems.

Now on its second year, the AIC offers college students a platform to think critically about the future of business and technology. More than a competition, it is a learning experience that encourages students to use digital tools to create solutions with practical impact across industries. The challenge is designed to push students beyond their comfort zones, fostering a mindset of innovation and adaptability that is crucial in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.

The AIC provides workshops and mentorship opportunities for participants. These sessions are designed to enhance students’ understanding of emerging technologies and their applications in various industries. Experts from the firm and other partner organizations share their insights and experiences, offering valuable guidance to the students.

By engaging with industry professionals, students gain a deeper understanding of how these technologies can be leveraged to solve complex problems and drive business success.

Furthermore, the AIC fosters a collaborative environment where students can network with peers, industry professionals and potential employers. This networking aspect is crucial in helping students build connections that can support their career growth and development. By participating in the AIC, students not only gain technical skills but also develop soft skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving, which are essential in the modern workplace. The relationships formed during the challenge can lead to internships, job opportunities and long-term professional connections that benefit students throughout their careers.

Last year’s winners

In 2024, the AIC brought together 57 students from 15 universities across the Philippines. The top prize was awarded to the Trial and Aaron team from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, comprising Kline Jeff Lepardo, Aaron Lowel Santomin and Julienne Vinarao. Second place went to QWERTY from Far Eastern University Manila, while third place was claimed by APC JAM from Asia-Pacific College.
