First Gen orders 7th LNG cargo for Batangas plants

Avatar

First Gen Corp., expects to receive its seventh cargo of liquified natural gas (LNG) this month.

This would boost supply for its power plants in Batangas, for the summer months when demand peaks.

The Lopez-led firm focused on clean energy said in a disclosure it had already completed a tender for the fresh LNG shipment.

The Inquirer asked for more details, including the volume and the supplier of the latest cargo. First Gen has not answered as of this writing.

Since the completion of its interim offshore terminal for LNG in Batangas, the firm has received six cargoes so far.

“The [terminal] will enable the company to utilize both Malampaya gas and LNG to the 2,000 megawatts (MW) of power plants located at the FGen Clean Energy Complex,” it said.

First Gen secured in January a government permit to operate and maintain the facility for 25 years. This was more than a year after the terminal was completely built.

The project is composed of a multipurpose jetty and an onshore gas receiving facility. It represents the initial phase of the LNG terminal.

The terminal was earlier tagged as an Energy Project of National Significance. This is a status that First Gen could take advantage of to fast-track its permitting processes.

Currently, the listed firm operates 28 power plants that can generate up to a total of 1,651 MW of electricity. They use technologies ranging from solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal.

First Gen also has a network of four gas-fired power plants in Batangas province.

They are the San Lorenzo, San Gabriel, Santa Rita, and Avion gas plants. These facilities have an additional capacity of 2,017 MW.
