First Gen powers 4th Lyceum campus

The renewable energy arm of the Lopez Group has expanded its partnership with the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), bringing the Cavite campus into its growing portfolio of schools powered by geothermal energy.

In a statement, First Gen Corp. said LPU-Cavite has started sourcing electricity directly from the company’s geothermal power plants in Leyte under an agreement finalized last month, in June.

The latest deal brings to four the number of LPU campuses supplied by First Gen with geothermal power through the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Retail Aggregation Program (RAP).

Earlier this year, LPU also shifted the electricity requirements of its campuses in Batangas City and Laguna to First Gen’s geothermal facilities. Its flagship campus in Manila followed suit in April.

“Partnering with First Gen is our commitment made visible. It is a tangible step toward environmental responsibility that we hope will inspire our students to carry this mindset forward in their own careers and communities,” said Roberto Laurel, LPU president for its Manila and Cavite campuses.

For First Gen, the partnership underscores growing demand among institutions seeking cleaner sources of electricity as they pursue their decarbonization goals.

The RAP, one of the DOE’s customer choice programs, enables electricity consumers to aggregate their power demand in order to qualify as contestable customers and choose their preferred suppliers.

The minimum threshold under the program is currently set at 100 kilowatts per month.

First Gen said the partnership could pave the way for collaboration in sustainability education.
