Fish harvests dropped 20% in May amid bad weather

Adverse weather conditions in major fishing grounds resulted in a more than 20-percent reduction in fish cargos landed at regional ports in May.

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority said in a report regional fish ports nationwide delivered 52,986.30 metric tons (MT) of fish last month.

This was much less than the 66,587.86 MT landed in May last year.

Also, this was an almost 3-percent decrease from the fish unloading volume of 54,602.36 MT in April.

The Navotas Fish Port Complex recorded the biggest volume unloaded at 26,078.81 MT in May. This was an 11.9-percent increase.

However, the General Santos Fish Port Complex posted the biggest decline of 42.9 percent. It ended with 19,854.24 MT, as fewer vessels arrived due to the inclement weather.

Similarly, the Iloilo Fish Port Complex delivered 2,687.55 MT of fish, down by 15.3 percent. This was due to less unloading activities.
