Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in North America can now send money home in real time via GCash after sealing a partnership with United States-based money transmitter Viamericas.

This latest move has enabled the Ayala-led e-wallet to expand its presence globally as it targets to reach more Filipinos abroad.

“This collaboration enhances financial control for OFWs and strengthens connections with their families, making the remittance process easier than ever,” GCash International general manager Paul Albano said in a statement on Tuesday.

“This partnership perfectly aligns with our mission to empower communities by providing accessible, affordable and reliable financial services,” Viamericas co-founder and executive chair Joseph Argilagos added.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, nearly 10 percent of the OFWs in 2023 were in North and South America.

GCash also set up partnership with Middle Eastern remittance platform Al Fardan in November, allowing OFWs in the United Arab Emirates to remit funds to their families back home via the e-wallet.

Apart from this, the popular financial technology player also has been rolling out GCash Overseas globally. It is currently available in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Japan, Germany, Spain, Qatar, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Singapore.

To sign up, users living abroad can use their international mobile numbers and Philippine passport or other Philippine valid ID as proof of identity.

GCash intends to make its money transfer and other financial services available in 10 more countries. Albano previously said they had secured the approval from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas for the expansion.

In addition, GCash is available as a payment platform at select merchants in several countries including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, Qatar, UAE, US, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and UK.

The e-wallet also has partnership with international payment gateway Visa, enabling its users to pay at over 100 million merchants across 200 countries and territories.
