Globe expands submarine cable to southern PH
Globe Telecom Inc. is set to bring faster internet connectivity to underserved areas in Southern Mindanao.
In a statement on Friday, Globe announced the expansion of its Globe Submarine Cable Project, which will link networks from Zamboanga to Isabela de Basilan, extending to Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
The 175-kilometer network project will cover the installation of the cable, inland and front-haul infrastructure, landing stations and access transport. It also includes the deployment of core and access network nodes to support both broadband and mobile services.
This project will begin with a submarine cable survey in early 2026. Full construction is expected to commence by mid-2027.
The rollout is seen to make Isabela City a resilient hub for high-speed internet in the region, complementing government efforts under the National Broadband Plan (NBP) to serve geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.
Globe’s announcement follows the success of initial testing and inspection of the Pagadian Government Network infrastructure conducted by the Department of Information and Communications Technology Region IX and NBP.
The government-initiated infrastructure aimed to connect 50 key government agencies during its initial phase, enhancing government-to-government services, as the region struggles with connectivity issues.
Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz said, “This is more than infrastructure. It is a bridge to opportunity.”
Cruz added that the expansion was motivated by the growing data consumption beyond 30 gigabytes per user each month.
