The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is set to unveil today, July 3, the government’s updated road map on artificial intelligence (AI), building on the original national strategy which was launched back in 2021.

According to the DTI, the National AI Strategy Roadmap 2.0 (NAISR 2.0) as well as a Center for AI Research (CAIR) will be launched with support from the Asian Development Bank.

“We at the DTI commit to working towards a future where innovation thrives, businesses flourish, and the lives of Filipinos are transformed,” Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual said in a statement on Tuesday.

These initiatives are indeed a testament to the efforts of the Marcos administration to support the growth of the AI industry and unlock the immense potential of the Philippines to become a national hub for AI development,” he added.

The DTI said the updated road map incorporates recent technological advancements, including generative AI.

It will also recalibrate the strategic actions, considering recent developments, and addresses emerging themes such as ethics and governance, added the government agency.

The new road map is also viewed by the DTI as a transformative instrument in boosting the Philippine economy and improving the quality of Filipinos.

As for the CAIR, which will be the first AI hub in the country, the DTI said it sees it as playing a pivotal role in leveraging the potential of AI technology to address societal and industrial challenges.

The DTI also hopes it will stimulate economic growth and promote inclusive development, and establish the Philippines as a leader in multiple AI application areas.
