Gov’t urged to release import quotas for poultry

Jordeene B. Lagare

The Meat Importers and Traders Association (Mita) is urging the government to issue import quotas for poultry and other commodities to prevent supply disruptions that could push up retail prices.

The group appealed for the issuance of minimum access volume (MAV) quotas for these meat products while revisions to the import quota policy are under deliberation.

“At present, a significant number of import orders have been placed on hold, creating uncertainty for importers, processors and downstream users,” Mita president emeritus Jesus Cham said in a Feb. 5 letter to the MAV secretariat.

“Any prolonged suspension in quota allocation will inevitably affect market supply, logistics planning and ultimately consumer prices,” Cham said.

The Department of Agriculture, for its part, might consider Mita’s proposal.

“Yes, that is possible,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said in a Viber message.
