IP registrations up nearly 2% in Q3
The number of intellectual property (IP) applications in the Philippines increased by nearly 2 percent during the third quarter of this year, bouncing back from the previous quarter’s 5.5-percent decline, as filings for two IP types saw double-digit growth during the three-month period.
Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) Director General Rowel Barba said that IP filings—which include registrations for patents, utility models (UM), industrial designs (ID), and trademarks—numbered 41,815 from July to September, marking a 1.9 percent increase compared to the same quarter in 2022.
“This year, we (directed) all the bureaus to increase their filings next year, that there should be a growth of at least 10 percent from this year’s performance,” Barba told reporters early Thursday night.
Barba said that filings for UMs, which provide patent-like protection at a shorter duration and with a less rigorous application process, is one of the growth drivers after applications increased by 37.2 percent to 1,538 from the 1,121 filed a year ago.
For IDs, which protect the unique appearance of a product, applications increased by 9.8 percent to 1,127 from 1,026, said the IPOPHL official.
Patent applications, on the other hand, saw a slight increase of 3.7 percent to 3,612 from 3,482 in the comparable period in 2022.
Trademark filings recorded the highest growth, jumping by 41 percent to 35,538 from the 35,3992 applications seen in the same quarter in 2022.
Meanwhile, copyright registrations nearly doubled during the same three-month period, soaring by 114 percent to 6,022 from 2,821. INQ
