Klook @10: Eco-friendly travel pushed
Hong Kong-based Klook, Asia’s leading travel platform, is launching a series of initiatives to promote sustainable tourism and support local communities as part of its 10th anniversary.
A recent study by Oxford Economics reveals that Klook’s operations significantly contribute to the regional economy, generating around $7.2 billion in gross domestic product and supporting more than 219,000 jobs across the Asia-Pacific in 2023.
For Klook, this underscores its role as a “vital economic driver” within the tourism sector, facilitating connections between partners and customers and stimulating growth across various travel-related industries, including experiences, entertainment and transportation.
“Our first decade has been about building a global platform that not only offers unforgettable experiences but also strengthens the local communities we engage with,” says Ethan Lin, CEO and cofounder of Klook.
“With more than 80 percent of our partners being small and medium enterprises, we are dedicated to creating genuine economic opportunities for these communities, which are essential to local tourism, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future for the industry in Asia.”
‘Eco-friendly’ tourism
Klook is now focusing on amplifying its impact on environmental sustainability and local communities, particularly in the Philippines. As a new member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, Klook aims to promote responsible practices across the experience sector.
“As we celebrate 10 years, our commitment to making travel a force for good is more robust than ever,” states Eric Gnock Fah, president and cofounder of Klook.
“We are implementing new initiatives designed to foster a more inclusive, responsible and sustainable future for tourism. Our goal is to deepen connections between travelers and local communities, preserve cultural heritage, and empower those whose livelihoods depend on tourism.”
Initiatives include establishing eco-friendly travel standards, partnering with businesses that prioritize sustainability, enhancing animal welfare at elephant sanctuaries and offering thousands of complimentary local tours led by experts to spotlight cultural heritage and boost small businesses.
With more than 200 certified sustainable activities worldwide, Klook seeks to provide travelers with more opportunities to make eco-conscious choices across various destinations. These activities meet internationally recognized sustainability standards, allowing travelers to align their choices with their values and promoting a future where exploration and environmental stewardship coexist.
In the Philippines, numerous activities under the PADI X Klook partnership have received certification under this sustainability initiative, catering to both beginners and seasoned adventurers.
“The Philippine market, rich in natural resources that require protection, aligns seamlessly with Klook’s sustainability priorities,” explains Michelle Ho, general manager of Klook Philippines and Thailand. “As we expand our sustainable offerings in the Philippines, we take pride in our partnerships with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), which play a crucial role in advancing the education and welfare of the country’s underwater treasures.”
Enhancing animal welfare standards
Klook is also introducing rigorous criteria for experiences involving elephants, developed in collaboration with Asian Captive Elephant Standards. The initiative not only seeks accreditation but also works with local partners to enhance care standards for the animals and the communities involved. Currently, 12 elephant sanctuaries are part of the “Klook Assessed” program, with more anticipated to join.
In honor of its 10th anniversary, Klook also announced plans to give back to the communities integral to its success by offering thousands of complimentary local tours. These experiences, guided by local experts, provide travelers with authentic insights into the cultural heritage of destinations— from vibrant markets in Seoul to the culinary traditions of Chiang Mai.
By highlighting these activities on its platform, Klook says it’s “helping local partners broaden their reach and drive growth for small businesses within the tourism ecosystem.”
