Mapúa taps ACEN to power Manila, Makati campuses

ACEN Corp. has clinched a deal to energize the campuses of Mapúa University with renewable energy.
In a statement Tuesday, the listed power unit of the Ayala Group said ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions’ (ACEN RES) power supply agreement with the engineering and technological school covers the latter’s Manila and Makati campuses.
ACEN RES is the group’s retail electricity unit.
The company said the electricity supply would be sourced from its portfolio of solar, wind and geothermal power assets.
This came just three months after Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna in Cabuyao also teamed up with ACEN RES to shift to renewable energy.
The deal was struck thanks to the government’s green energy option program (GEOP). This allows a consumer that uses a minimum monthly peak demand of 100 kilowatts to tap renewable energy producers, while keeping the physical connection to their distribution utility’s power lines.
This also frees consumers from investing in additional equipment, such as rooftop solar panels.
The Philippine government launched GEOP to encourage the use of clean energy sources, as it has committed to cutting down its reliance on fossil fuels.
Currently, coal continues to dominate the Philippines’ electricity generation mix.
“ACEN, with a goal to reach 100 percent renewable energy generation by 2025, is dedicated to delivering clean, reliable, and affordable power,” said Tony Valdez, senior vice president and head of market transformation at ACEN.
