Megaworld ramps up hospitality development

Megaworld is firming up its dominance in the hospitality business, with bolder moves to grow its nationwide portfolio with nearly 12,000 additional room keys by 2032.

The group will introduce new hotel developments in key destinations, such as Palawan and Ilocos Norte, which would include Megaworld’s homegrown hotel brands and international branded hotels.

In support of this, Megaworld has created Megaworld Global Hotels and Resorts (MGHR), tasked with leading two focused groups—Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR) and Megaworld Global Hospitality (MGH).

MHR will oversee the company’s hotel assets in Metro Manila, Boracay, Batangas and Cebu. Industry veteran Socrates Alvaro, who has about two decades of experience in major hospitality markets, leads as managing director.

MGH, meanwhile, will handle Mövenpick Manila Bay Westside, Megaworld’s biggest hotel property, as well as the company’s new hotel properties in Palawan. It will also manage the three properties in Iloilo—Courtyard by Marriott, Richmonde Hotel Iloilo and Belmont Hotel Iloilo.

Anna Vergara, who has over 32 years of experience with global hotel chain Marriott International, serves as MGH managing director.

The new offerings are expected to entice more foreign travelers in the local market, Megaworld president and CEO Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso said.

“One of our biggest contributions to nation-building is to help make our tourism industry more vibrant and attractive, especially to foreign visitors,” Gutierrez-Alfonso said.
