Meralco to procure 200-MW renewable energy
Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has launched a competitive bidding process to secure 200 megawatts of baseload renewable energy supply, as part of its compliance with the government-mandated Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS).
In a statement on Monday, Meralco said it has started the competitive selection process (CSP) for the supply requirement after receiving a certificate of conformity from the Department of Energy (DOE) on Dec. 4.
“This CSP is consistent with Meralco’s ongoing efforts to expand its supply portfolio sourced from renewable energy sources whilst securing Meralco’s RPS compliance through a competitive and transparent bidding process,” Meralco senior vice president and head of regulatory management Jose Ronald Valles said.
The certification covers the CSP under Meralco’s latest DOE-approved Power Supply Procurement Plan.
Through its bids and awards committee for power supply agreements (PSAs), Meralco is inviting power generation companies to participate in the procurement.
Interested bidders are required to submit their expressions of interest by Jan. 6 next year.
A prebid conference is scheduled on Jan. 15, while the deadline for bid submission has been set for Feb. 16.
Meralco said the CSP would result in a four-year PSA, covering Meralco’s full 200-MW baseload requirement. Any resulting PSA will remain subject to approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission before it can take effect.
Meralco said the procurement aligns with broader efforts to grow its renewable energy portfolio, while ensuring compliance with RPS obligations through a transparent and competitive bidding process.
As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, Meralco has already contracted 1,536 MW of renewable energy capacity from various suppliers, exceeding its initial target of 1,500 MW.
Based on these sourcing initiatives, renewable energy is projected to account for 22 percent of Meralco’s total supply portfolio by 2030.
Meralco did not disclose potential suppliers or pricing details, noting that these would be determined through the CSP in accordance with regulatory requirements.
