Meralco, Viet firms partner to drive EV adoption

Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has partnered with two Vietnamese firms for collaboration on boosting the local electric vehicle (EV) market.

The power distribution giant on Wednesday said the two foreign firms were V-Green Global Charging Station Development Corp. (V-Green) and Green and Smart Mobility Joint Stock Company (Green GSM).

V-Green is known in Vietnam for its EV charging network while Green GSM is a ride-hailing service provider.

As partners, the three parties would develop low-carbon mobility solutions focused on EV infrastructure for the Philippine capital region and key cities nationwide.

The companies will also identify and assess potential sites for EV charging stations and electric taxi hubs, explore ways to rev up EV adoption. They will also exchange knowledge on these technologies.

“This partnership brings together our collective strength in infrastructure, technology, and experience that will redefine our cities and our communities. Together, we intend to reframe the way we think about energy, transport, and sustainability,” Meralco chair and chief executive officer Manuel V. Pangilinan said in a statement.

The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. earlier said that 4 percent of the estimated 500,000 vehicle purchases this year will be EVs.
