NTC keeps pressure on telcos’ broadband services

Three of the country’s largest telecommunications companies posted largely “very satisfactory” mobile broadband speeds in follow-up tests conducted with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), but the regulator remained concerned over service deficiencies in several areas.

This comes after the NTC began imposing P100,000 daily fines on Smart Communications Inc., DITO Telecommunity Corp. and Globe Telecom Inc. last month over what it described as “poor mobile broadband signals.”

Based on results released by the NTC on Thursday, the three telcos recorded download speeds exceeding 50 megabits per second (Mbps) in 113 of the 142 test campaigns, or 79.58 percent of the tests conducted

These were based on joint quality-of-service assessments conducted by the NTC in Quezon City, San Juan, Pasig and Taguig, with representatives from the three operators present to observe the testing methodology.

DITO, which was previously flagged for poor service in San Juan, Pasay and Las Piñas, recorded the highest download speed among the three operators at 422 Mbps along Bonny Serrano Avenue in Barangay Socorro, Quezon City.

However, the company also registered no measurable download speed outside Farmers Market in Cubao.
