Petron seeks go-ahead for P314-M project

Petron Corp. is seeking the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) approval to build P314.32 million worth of facilities that would connect its refinery solid fuel-fired boiler (RSFFB) project to a substation in Bataan.

Based on a document posted by the ERC, Petron wants the regulator’s green light to develop, own and operate dedicated point-to-point facilities that will link the boiler project to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines’ Hermosa-Bataan combined cycle power plant line 3 substation.

Petron also said the undertaking will be used exclusively for Petron’s RSFFB, and allow the delivery of excess power to the Luzon grid as well as and the reception of immediate backup power in case of loss or tripping of the RSFFB.

“The removal of such a connection asset from the transmission system will not affect the Luzon Grid,” it said.

The listed firm said it has the financial capability to construct the connection asset, which will be funded through loans and equity.

After carefully studying its four options for the project, Petron opted to build a new 34.5-kilovolt transmission line and switchyard facilities to serve as a connection point of the RSFFB to NGCP’s 230 kV installation.

The company said this option “is more economical and viable in order to convey the electric power generated by the project to the public whilst ensuring the safe operation of the assets,” the document stated.

The ERC, finding the application to be sufficient in form, has scheduled a hearing on Feb. 20.
