Potato Corner sets up shop in Taiwan

Po family-led food retailer Shakey’s Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. is on a roll for the expansion of Potato Corner in international markets, having launched their first outlet for the popular Filipino fries brand.

In a disclosure Wednesday, the group said that it had opened the flavored fries kiosk chain’s first store last month in Xinyi District’s Uni-President Department Store Taipei.

This was made possible with Potato Corner’s partnership with Fujin Tree Group, a lifestyle and food and beverage operator in Taiwan. It has a portfolio of 15 brands, including a Michelin-star restaurant.

“It’s always a proud moment to bring our beloved brand to new international shores. Potato Corner’s debut in Taipei is a milestone not just for our flavored fries, but for our Group’s vision of WOW-ing more guests around the world,” said Vicente Gregorio, Shakey’s Pizza president and chief executive officer.

“What also inspires confidence is PC’s proven track record of collaborating with franchisees across the globe to bring this ambition to life,” he added.

Jay Wu, founder of Fujin Tree Group, said the firm was already eyeing for the roll out of more stores by the end of 2025.

Gregorio echoed this, saying that Shakey’s group is optimistic about Potato Corner scaling its presence in the new market.

Last July, the company had also floated the possibility of Potato Corner entering Laos.

Since gaining control over Potato Corner three years ago, the company has been boosting the brand’s footprint in key markets. Currently, it has 2,345 stores globally.

The pizza chain earlier reported that its earnings in the first half declined by 17 percent to P347 million. But the group was bullish about posting stronger figures this second semester with the opening of new 430 stores.

It had earmarked about P1 billion this year to further expand its store network, with more branches located outside Metro Manila.
