PSEi up 1.98% on peso strength, Wall St cues

Emmanuel John Abris

Local stocks rebounded on Tuesday, lifted by the peso’s appreciation and positive signals from Wall Street, although trading remained subdued amid lingering investor caution.

The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) surged 1.98 percent or 125.44 points to close at 6,474.60, snapping recent weakness as investors took cues from firmer global markets.

Michael Ricafort, chief economist at Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., said the PSEi gained for the third time in four trading days, rising by nearly 2 percent to close at an intraday high of 6,474.60.

Ricafort said this was PSEi’s strongest finish in nearly a month or since Jan. 15, 2026, and among the highest in almost seven months or since July 14, 2025.

“The PSEi also advanced after US stock markets rose anew by 0.5 percent to 0.9 percent, with most hovering near record highs,” he said. “The Dow Jones Industrial Average logged fresh records for the second straight session, staying above 50,000, following continued diplomatic signals from Trump in dealing with China and Iran.”

Philstocks financial manager Japhet Tantiangco said a stronger local currency also helped fuel buying activity.

Despite the advance, market participation stayed soft.

Net value turnover reached P5.90 billion, falling short of the year-to-date average of P6.40 billion—an indication that many investors are still taking a wait-and-see stance.

Foreign funds provided support to the market, ending the session as net buyers with inflows totaling P1.01 billion.

Sectoral performance was broadly positive, with all gauges finishing in the green. Market breadth also favored the bulls, as gainers outpaced losers, 110 to 90.
