San Miguel power unit plans Zamboanga expansion

A subsidiary of San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp. plans to increase the capacity of its gas turbine power plant project in Zamboanga City from 28 megawatts (MW) to 56 MW.
A document submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources showed that Malita Power Inc. (formerly San Miguel Consolidated Power Corp.) has proposed to expand the existing facility in Sangali town amid the anticipated rising electricity demand in the province.
While the first part has already secured an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) from the agency, the firm still needs to obtain a fresh permit for any expansion plans.
Developers have to secure ECC before they can proceed with some projects, as this permit certifies that the activity will not negatively impact the environment.
The company is proposing to double the capacity by installing an additional gas turbine that runs on diesel oil.
Its target timeline and project cost were not mentioned.
Malita Power said the additional capacity will deliver “a reliable transmission network” for the Zamboanga Peninsula to ensure continuous normal grid operation in the area.
Following power fluctuations in 2020, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines called for more power plants in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
