SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPH) is set to expand its retail footprint in Mindanao with the opening of SM City Zamboanga on March 20. This marks the company’s 90th mall in the Philippines and its eighth in Mindanao.

The Sy family-led property giant said on Wednesday the new mall will add more than 42,000 square meters of gross leasable space to the Zamboanga City retail market. It will further strengthen the group’s presence in the southern Philippines.

The four-level mall is located along Mayor Vitaliano Agan Avenue in Barangay Camino Nuevo. It builds on the company’s earlier investment in the city through SM City Mindpro, which opened in 2020.

SMPH president Jeffrey Lim said the company sees strong potential in the area.

“Zamboanga is a strong and growing market. This expansion allows us to broaden our footprint and respond to rising economic activity in the area,” Lim said. “With this investment, we also expect to create jobs, support local enterprises and help drive domestic tourism in the region.”

SM City Zamboanga will introduce several first-in-the-city features. These include the tallest scenic elevator in Mindanao equipped with LED displays and a corner outdoor LED wall capable of displaying 3D content.

The mall will also incorporate sustainability initiatives, such as solar panels, a Trash to Cash recycling program, and an e-waste collection facility. It will also host Zamboanga’s first electric vehicle charging station.

To cater to the region’s diverse community, the mall will include a Muslim Prayer Room. Major tenants include The SM Store, Mindpro Supermarket, Adidas, Fully Booked, JCO Reserve and Gashapon from Japan.

Additional attractions include an indoor garden with a skylight ceiling and aviary-themed park called Skyplaza, an upgraded Cyberzone, a modernized food court, three digital SM Cinemas including two Director’s Club theaters, and a dedicated Paw Park.

Last month, SMPH said it plans to open up to four malls this year, located in General Trias, Cavite; Sta. Rosa, Laguna; Tagum, Davao del Norte; and Zamboanga City.
