SM Prime hits 100-MW rooftop solar rollout

SM Prime Holdings Inc. has installed 100 megawatt-peak (MWp) rooftop solar capacity across its properties, marking one of the country’s largest private-sector deployments of solar photovoltaic systems.

The company reached the milestone during its “Switch On to 100 MW” event at SM City North EDSA on Dec. 10, led by SM Supermalls president Steven Tan.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin and other government officials attended the ceremony.

SM Prime’s solar program, rolled out over several years, now covers 59 properties, where more than 200,000 solar modules have been installed across 65 hectares of rooftop space.

The systems supply part of the power needs of the malls while cutting emissions and reducing dependence on the grid.

Its installations are designed to help lower consumption during peak hours, strengthen energy resilience and support host communities that rely on its malls as daily activity centers.

Garin, who witnessed the switch-on ceremony, said initiatives like SM Prime’s make sustainability “accessible, visible and part of daily life.”

“Clean energy becomes truly powerful when people feel its benefits where they live, work and gather,” she said.

“Every megawatt of clean energy that comes online helps reduce our reliance on imported fuel, shields consumers from volatile energy prices, and strengthens our long-term climate commitments,” she added.

SM Prime’s growing rooftop solar footprint forms part of its broader shift toward renewable energy within its operations.

The company said scaling up clean technologies supports its long-term goal of building more energy-efficient and climate-resilient properties.

The Department of Energy, which briefly acknowledged the milestone during the event, said projects led by the private sector contribute meaningfully to the country’s climate and energy security targets.
