SMC Masinloc coal plant grid line OKd

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) subsidiary Masinloc Power Co. Ltd. (MPCL) secured regulatory approval to construct and own P1.7-billion transmission facilities to connect its 700-megawatt (MW) coal plant to the national grid.

In a decision dated June 30, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said the dedicated point-to-point limited transmission assets would be linked to the Castillejos Substation and Palauig Substation of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

The ERC, however, rejected the company’s request to also operate and maintain the facilities, with these tasks assigned to the NGCP.

“In case the subject assets shall be required for competitive purposes, the ownership thereof shall be transferred to NGCP using the fair market price of the said facilities, subject to optimization,” it added.

The coal-fired power plant has two units, with capacity of 350 MW each. It is located in Masinloc, Zambales.

It was already cleared by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, with the coal plant even tagged as a project of national significance by the Department of Energy.
