SMIC clean energy sourcing rose to 31%

Emmanuel John Abris

SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) said it increased renewable energy sourcing to 31 percent of its total electricity consumption in 2025 as the group accelerated its shift toward cleaner energy across its businesses.

The parent company of the SM Group said renewable energy accounted for about 730 million kilowatt-hours of its electricity use last year, up from 27 percent in 2024.

SMIC said the transition helped the group avoid 370,644 metric tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing nearly 297,000 electric-powered passenger vehicles from the road for a year.

“For us, investing in renewable energy is both a sustainability and business decision,” SMIC president and CEO Frederic DyBuncio said.

“It helps us manage long-term energy costs, improve operational efficiency and build more resilient businesses to help us better serve our customers, tenants, communities and other stakeholders,” he added.

Leading the group’s renewable energy strategy is Philippine Geothermal Production Co. (PGPC), a wholly owned subsidiary of SMIC that operates the Mak-Ban and Tiwi steam fields in Batangas, Laguna and Albay.

The geothermal facilities can generate up to 400 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy. This is enough to power households, offices and industrial facilities.

PGPC is also developing six new geothermal sites in Luzon with the potential to add another 400 MW of clean energy capacity.

Across its property developments, SM Prime Holdings Inc. has installed over 200,000 solar panels across 69 properties as part of broader energy efficiency initiatives.

The company added that Alfamart recently installed solar panels at its Saraiya Distribution Center in Quezon Province, with a solar capacity of 120.28 kilowatt-peak, to improve supply chain efficiency.

Meanwhile, SMIC’s banking units continued to expand sustainable financing activities. BDO Unibank Inc. said it had funded P1.21 trillion worth of sustainable projects as of end-2025, including 71 renewable energy developments amounting to P177 billion.

China Banking Corp., for its part, extended P72 billion in financing for energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects last year.

SMIC said it continued integrating sustainability initiatives across its retail, property, banking and portfolio investment businesses as part of its long-term operational strategy.
