Spanish firm bullish on Laguna wind park

Lisbet K. Esmael

Acciona Energía said its multibillion-peso wind park in Laguna province is on track for commercial operation by the end of this year.

The Spanish renewable energy giant expects the smooth deployment of the 101-megawatt (MW) Kalayaan 2 wind park after installing its first wind turbine.

The project, the firm said, would have 17 turbines. These will be strong enough for storm-prone environments and designed with smart control algorithms and advanced sensor technology to protect them during typhoons.

The total project cost was not specified, but an earlier statement pegged an investment of P8.7 billion.

Global clean energy solutions provider Goldwind was tapped as the main supplier of the wind turbines and as Acciona Energía’s engineering partner.

According to Acciona Energía, the wind facility obtained a 20-year power purchase agreement after winning in the fourth round of the government’s green energy auctions.

This project was previously a tie-up between Acciona Energía and Singapore-based power producer The Blue Circle. But, based on a statement in August last year, both parties decided to focus on different markets independently.

Acciona Energía is taking charge of renewable energy projects in the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The firm earlier said it would “accelerate its expansion [in the Philippines] in the coming years.”

Aside from Kalayaan 2, it is also developing the 180-MW peak Daanbantayan solar park in Cebu. This project was also secured during the recent bidding for green power contracts.

“The [contract] award gives long-term certainty for the energy these projects will produce, supporting the Philippines in reaching its renewable energy targets while delivering clean, reliable power to consumers,” Acciona Energía said earlier.

The group, through its water and infrastructure units, has already cemented its presence in the Philippines for about a decade. They delivered projects like the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway and the Putatan II and Laguna Lake water treatment plants.

For its operations abroad, Acciona Energía boasts a 14,600-MW renewable energy portfolio across 24 countries.
