Tech care firm Asurion eyes new contact center in Cebu

United States-based tech care giant Asurion is planning to establish another contact center in the country, this time in Cebu.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday shared the company’s latest expansion plan, a move expected to generate at least 500 jobs this year.

Asurion general counsel Grant Mullins met with the DTI’s Philippine Trade and Investment Center Commercial Counselor Kenneth Yap and the Philippine Embassy in Washington Minister and Consul Hans Siriban on June 5 to discuss the firm’s plans.

Mullins said the company intended to grow its Philippine operations in line with rising demand from its market base in the US.

The DTI said the Cebu site would support Asurion’s services to over 100 million US customers.

“There is a welcoming environment for investors, especially with the support of the Marcos administration,” Mullins said, citing the company’s successful expansion in the Clark Freeport Zone last year as a model for the Cebu rollout.

Strategic location

Yap said the Philippines remained a strategic location for Asurion, being its only international hub for mobile phone restoration.

“The country plays a central role in Asurion’s global operations,” he said, pointing to the 1,400 technicians currently employed in iPhone repair services.

With the addition of Cebu, Asurion’s local workforce is expected to grow to about 8,000 employees.

The company, which began operating in the Philippines in 2009, also runs facilities in Manila, Clark, Laguna and Iloilo, supporting software development, technical support and device repair services for its worldwide client base.

The country’s local contact center industry is projected to grow by 5 percent to 7 percent this year, pushing revenues to at least $39.9 billion and signaling continued strength of the country’s flagship outsourcing sector.
