US Catholic group plans $500-M hospital in the Philippines

American healthcare giant Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) is investing up to $500 million or about P28.5 billion to develop a premium tertiary hospital in the Philippines. This is according to the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs of the Philippines (Osapiea).

“If realized, it would mark one of the largest private-sector healthcare investments by a US-based system in the Philippines,” the Osapiea said in a statement on Wednesday.

Aside from investing $300 million to $500 million in a hospital, BSMH informed President Marcos of its plans to expand its existing Global Business Services (GBS) operations in the country during a meeting in Washington, DC held on Monday.

BSMH intends to scale up its Manila operations to approximately 1,200 professionals from the current workforce of around 170, which will operate alongside the firm’s US-based teams.

The Osapiea said this public-private partnership will provide modern facilities and premium medical services to the country while supporting BSMH’s global workforce.

“As a $13-billion integrated Catholic health delivery system based in the United States, we’re proud to expand our global reach and deepen our existing commitment in the Philippines,” BSMH president and CEO John Starcher said.

“[W]e are excited to begin the aggressive exploration of developing state‑of‑the‑art healthcare delivery services to provide unique, premium access to the Filipinos and our own associates,” Starcher said.

Frederick Go, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs, said the BSMH investment is a “strong vote of confidence” in the country that presents “a transformative opportunity” for healthcare and services sectors.

Go assured that the Philippine government will work closely with BSMH to put their plans into reality.
