Jericho Rosales, Donny Pangilinan talk about their personal style

Raoul Chee Kee

The fans who gathered at the atrium of Mall of Asia last week were there to see Jericho Rosales and Donny Pangilinan—and the two were only too happy to oblige. Instead of simply stepping on to the stage and heading to their seats, Donny piggybacked on Echo whose legs and back didn’t fail him.

“I’m a vampire,” the latter who is in his mid-40s joked; he could very well be given his youthful looks and pep. Next to Donny, who is in his mid-20s, he could pass himself off as a slightly older “barkada.”

The two were tapped by Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo to endorse their new range of wide-leg pants. It was interesting to hear them talk about their personal styles and how they’ve come to incorporate new pieces into their wardrobe.

“Clothes are a way to express yourself,” Donny said. He prefers the timeless, no-nonsense appeal of a neutral top and jeans or slacks, finishing off with a pair of white sneakers.

“I love white sneakers [even if] I already have so many at home. People often say ‘fashion over comfort,’ but I choose whatever looks comfortable. Mas gusto ko pa rin ang comfort,” Donny added.

Echo is known for being a clotheshorse, one who’s willing to try out different styles depending on his mood.

“I tied a bandana around my neck today because I wanted to give off this pirate-like vibe,” he said.

Throwback

Even as he horsed around with Donny, slapping his knee and making faces for the crowd from time to time, Echo also showed that he is a keen observer, one who is aware that fashion is cyclical.

“[Wide-leg pants are] very throwback, in a way. This is what we used to wear when we danced in ‘ASAP.’ We styled this decades ago.”

Now, he said he dresses more “street style” and that his staff knows how to put together looks for him to wear when he needs to change his outfit on a given day.

“I used to be on the worst-dressed lists back in the late ’90s and early 2000s. I would wear hand-me-downs, but ever since I learned about shapes and textures, I’ve found my own style,” Echo said.

“Our job as actors is really fun because we get to play different characters,” he added.

Donny agreed, but said that even when he’s portraying a particular role, he gravitates to a neutral palette. “I’m very chill. I don’t like a lot of loud things.” And his fans were there for it with one adoring fan screaming, “Lahat bagay sa ’yo! (Everything looks good on you!)”
