James has held musical residencies and embarked on countless tours throughout his six decades in the entertainment scene. While he appreciates the relative ease and simplicity of doing a series of shows at a single venue, he still enjoys the “circus life,” so to speak.

Contemplative music

“[With residencies,] it’s great relief for the band and crew not to have to break [the stage] down and set it up once a day; and to be able to stay in one place,” the 75-year-old American said in an interview on “The Late Night with Stephen Colbert.”

“But I like the one-offs,” added James, one of the most important singer-songwriters to have emerged in the 1970s. “I like having a feel of the different regions or different populations each day.”

Having sold more than 100 million records worldwide, James is one of the best-selling artists all of all time. He is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and has won six Grammy awards.

His contemplative, heartfelt music—which often chronicled his own life experiences and of the boomer generation—has had a profound impact on people from all walks of life.

Throughout his illustrious career, James has released 20 studio albums and six compilation albums. To this day, he continues to put out critically acclaimed projects. As a testament to his skill and longevity, his latest effort, “American Standard” (2020),” won the best traditional pop album at the 2021 Grammys.

The album also debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, making James the first music act to score at least one Top 10 album in each of the last six decades. INQ
