A bagful of doubts

I had a long conversation with myself while inside Chanel in Rome. I wanted the Chanel 22 handbag. But buying it would cost as much as a vintage piece from Riquezza.
Here’s how my inner dialogue went:
“How many black bags do you really need?”

In theory, just one. But what about staying fashionable?
“Do you really think it’s worth the price?”
Well, it is Chanel. And it holds its value. It even appreciates—like a stock.

“And how many of these ‘stocks’ have you actually sold?”
Zero.

I even phoned a friend, Patrice Diaz.
“Should I buy this bag?” I asked.
She replied, “So you’ll look like everyone else?”

At that point, the bag was taking up way too much mental real estate. It was getting ridiculous.
So I turned to the sales associate and said,
“Maybe it’s not for me.”

And told myself, “Well, would you look at that—I’m saving!”
Then I headed over to Fendi and got the leather interlaced mini Peekaboo instead.
Moral of the story? I’m not entirely sure.

But in light of what my fashion conscience said, here are a few bags and brands for those who don’t want what everyone else has.
(Though I can’t say with full confidence that I’m quite there myself.)
