A testament to Dutch-Filipino friendship

The Dutch Embassy in Manila hosted its annual King’s Day celebration on April 30, honoring a cherished tradition that symbolizes not only the birthday of King Willem-Alexander but also the enduring friendship between the Netherlands and the Philippines.

Originally observed on April 27, the event was held on the birthday of Queen Juliana, who introduced the celebration in 1949 to promote unity and patriotism in the aftermath of World War II. Guests arrived adorned in orange, reflecting the vibrant spirit and deep cultural pride shared across Dutch communities worldwide.

Throughout the evening, Ambassador Marielle Geraedts highlighted the strength of Dutch-Filipino ties, now in their 74th year of diplomatic relations. From Queen Máxima’s recent visit to champion financial inclusion, to ongoing cooperation in climate resilience and sustainable water infrastructure, the Netherlands reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Filipino development.

Dutch expertise in coastal protection and nature-based solutions was showcased as vital to helping the Philippines navigate the growing challenges of climate change.

Economic and humanitarian collaboration also took centerstage, with the Dutch envoy noting that the Netherlands ranks among the top three foreign investors in the Philippines, with over 150 Dutch companies operating locally.

As the two nations look toward their 75th year of bilateral relations in 2026, Geraedts expressed deep appreciation for the warm partnership with Filipino institutions and civil society. He emphasized shared values of democracy, human rights, and international law, closing the celebration with gratitude and hope for a more prosperous, united future.
