Affordable skincare products that actually work

Colleen Cosme

Not everyone has the budget to drop a couple thousand pesos on a single skincare product, and honestly, that is completely okay. To me, being a beauty girl has never been defined by the price tag sitting on your vanity, but by the gems you discover, regardless of how much they cost.

It’s why a lot of the products that genuinely changed my skin were things I picked up during a sale, discovered through beauty forums, or saved up for slowly, back when I still had a college student budget.

Affordable skincare has also become so much better over the years. Brands today are focusing more on ingredients and formulations instead of just packaging and marketing, which means you can build a genuinely effective routine without overspending.

That said, these are some of my favorite skincare products under P1,000 that I keep coming back to.

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

I’ve always enjoyed The Ordinary because it is such a straightforward brand. You get exactly what the label promises: focused ingredients, simple packaging, and formulas built around function rather than aesthetics. This was honestly the brand that started my skincare obsession. Back when I was working with a college student budget, their products felt like an accessible entry point into active skincare.

The Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% became one of my first “serious” serums, and it is still one of the products I recommend most to beginners. Niacinamide helps regulate oil production, brighten uneven skin tone, soften the appearance of pores, and support the skin barrier, while zinc helps calm inflammation and blemishes.

What I like most about this serum is how multifunctional it feels. If you’re spending money on skincare, you want it to address more than one concern.

Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Snail mucin sounds strange at first, but this essence became a cult favorite for a reason. It gives that hydrated, glass skin finish Korean skincare is known for—where skin looks plump, smooth, and naturally luminous.

You would expect the texture to feel sticky, but it is surprisingly lightweight and absorbs beautifully into the skin without feeling heavy. Whenever my skin feels dehydrated, irritated, or rough from overusing actives, this is one of the first products I reach for.

It also works incredibly well with a gua sha. The formula gives just enough slip for the tool to glide comfortably across the skin without tugging, while still sinking in nicely afterward.

Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen

Finding a sunscreen you genuinely enjoy wearing every day matters more than people realize. Personally, once the weather gets unbearably hot, I cannot bring myself to wear thick, heavy formulas.

The Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence remains one of the best lightweight sunscreens at this price point. It feels watery, breathable, and almost disappears into the skin after application. In the Philippine weather, that kind of texture makes all the difference because heavier sunscreens can quickly become uncomfortable in humidity.

It also layers beautifully under makeup without pilling or leaving the skin overly greasy throughout the day, which is probably why so many people continue to repurchase it.

Pond’s Bright Triple Glow Serum

Pond’s Bright Triple Glow Serum

This was probably one of my more recent skincare discoveries, and honestly, one of the more surprising ones, too. I know I might be late to it, but this serum gives such a beautiful, brightening effect that it is difficult not to love.

The formula combines niacinamide, glutathione-inspired ingredients, and vitamin C derivatives to help target dullness and uneven tone, but what really stands out is the finish it leaves on the skin. It gives this almost lit-from-within glow, especially underneath makeup, where your complexion looks fresher, healthier, and naturally radiant instead of shiny.

It also feels lightweight enough for everyday wear and layers easily into a routine without becoming sticky or heavy.

Human Nature Vitamin C + Hya Radiance Serum

Human Nature Vitamin C + Hya Radiance Serum

Local skincare has become incredibly underrated, and Human Nature has thoughtfully formulated products at accessible prices.

What I really like about this serum is how gentle it feels on the skin, especially considering it uses naturally derived ingredients. It is packed with plant-based vitamin C that helps bring out your natural radiance while helping defend the skin from free radicals, pollutants, and everyday stress.

It also promotes collagen production, which helps improve elasticity and firmness over time. Another thing I love is that it uses 100 percent natural calamansi extract, which gives the formula a fresher, lighter feel compared to harsher vitamin C products.

Despite being hydrating, it still feels comfortable in humid weather and sits well underneath other skincare and makeup products.

+ful Pimple Patches

Pimple patches are probably one of the skincare products that are simply fun to use. There are so many cute designs now that dealing with a breakout somehow feels a little less annoying.

One of my favorite local discoveries has been +ful Pimple Patches. They are such a good local alternative to the Cosrx pimple patches, which are still some of the best I’ve tried.

They help flatten pimples overnight, keep me from picking at my skin, and protect irritated spots throughout the day. I also like that they adhere really well without being too obvious on the skin, while the cute graphics make them even more enjoyable to wear.
