Amplifying Filipino voices

It’s an exciting time to be a music fan these days, especially if your favorites happen to be Filipino. Many call this period a new golden era for OPM, and it’s understandable why it may feel this way. Look at the charts and the festival lineups; listen to the languages on the airwaves—there are more names, faces, colors, and voices that sound just like yours and mine, now seen and heard across the world.

This makes it an equally exciting time to be working in the music industry, too. For Roslyn Pineda, president of Sony Music Publishing Asia, it’s seeing songs by our artists evolve into pop culture moments of their own that is most fulfilling.

Knowing how a song has saved a fan’s life, hearing the largest concert crowd sing back to an artist, and witnessing the rawest emotions as fans experience their favorite artists’ releases or performances are proof of “how music can change lives, inspire people, and even shape a nation’s identity,” Pineda says.

Fondly called “Mama Sony,” Pineda believes that these moments can only truly take form when artists and creatives get enough support. “Putting the songwriters and artists first, striving for excellence, going out on a limb for your songwriter/artist, and being flexible—that’s the way to thrive!”
