‘Balikbayan diplomat’ bids Manila goodbye

The Israel Embassy in Manila commemorated the 77th Independence Day of the State of Israel with a heartfelt celebration that brought together guests from government, civil society, business, the academe, media, and the Jewish and Israeli communities.
The evening held special meaning as it marked the final National Day reception of Ambassador Ilan Fluss, who is concluding his seven-year tenure in the Philippines. In his remarks, Fluss expressed deep appreciation for the country he called his second home and reflected on the strong bond between the Israeli and Filipino peoples.

Fluss shared his personal journey as a “balikbayan diplomat,” having first served in Manila in the 1990s. He marveled at the country’s transformation while affirming that the warmth and kindness of Filipinos remained unchanged. He highlighted major milestones in bilateral cooperation, including the development of smart agriculture projects like the country’s largest greenhouse in Bulacan, the rollout of solar-powered irrigation systems, and humanitarian partnerships across disaster-affected communities.

The ambassador also praised shared values of family, resilience, and innovation that continue to shape strong ties between the two nations.
The evening included a tribute to Filipino Israeli friendship, featuring the story of Camille Jesalva, a Filipina overseas worker whose bravery during the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel became a symbol of compassion and courage.
As his tenure draws to a close, Fluss expressed gratitude for the warmth and hospitality shown to his family during their time in the Philippines, raising a final toast to the enduring friendship, peace, and prosperity shared by Israel and the Philippines.
